Evidence-Based Medicine
July 2016. An “executive physical.” As a triathlete, I anticipated a clean bill of health. Instead, I had an abnormality on chest x-ray. A subsequent computed tomography (CT) scan revealed a 1.5 cm nodule in the left lower lobe. Not for me the anxious wait for follow-up. A hallway discussion led to an appointment in a week, and a positron emission tomography (PET) scan the following day. But connections cannot guarantee good news. The options presented to me were: wait for 6 months to see if the mass got bigger, biopsy, or surgery.
