How Can We Help the Advancing American Kidney Health Initiative Achieve its Transplantation Goals?

The Advancing American Kidney Health (AAKH) initiative, launched in July 2019, laid out the federal government’s vision for transforming how kidney disease and kidney failure are prevented and treated in the United States. The AAKH initiative emphasizes the value of kidney transplant as the gold standard treatment for kidney failure while acknowledging the dramatic disparity between the number of patients waiting for kidneys and the number of organs available for transplant. As such, the AAKH initiative puts forth numerous policy changes aimed at giving patients greater access to transplantation by doubling the number of kidneys available for transplant in the next decade.
