Kidney Biopsies in Elderly Chinese Patients: A Nationwide Survey

As life expectancy increases, more elderly patients are affected by acute and chronic diseases.1 The prevalence of CKD has been estimated to be 21.7% in persons aged 65 to 79 years and as high as 51.1% in persons 80 years and older, whereas the prevalence in younger adults is only about 4%.2 Kidney biopsy could provide important diagnostic clues in patients with kidney disease. However, data for kidney biopsies among elderly patients are lacking. Previous studies from developed countries are small in scale, limiting epidemiologic evaluation of the spectrum of biopsy-proven kidney diseases among elderly patients.
