HCV-Infected Deceased Donor Kidney Transplantation—Time to Take Up the Offer

Kidney transplantation offers the best quality of life and survival for patients with kidney failure. Although the number of kidney transplantations performed annually has grown only modestly, the prevalence of kidney failure has increased substantially, resulting in a proportional increase in organ shortage.1 Consequently, more than 95,000 patients are waiting for kidney transplants, and wait times exceed 5 years for many patients in the United States.1,2 With 5-year mortality of 42% to 52% on dialysis, many die due to the shortage of available kidneys.
