Diabetic kidney disease (DKD) is the leading microvascular complication of both type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) and a major cause of end-stage kidney disease.1 Recent progress in DM pharmacologic treatment, such as the introduction of new antihyperglycemic agents like SGLT2 inhibitors,1,2 has led to important advances in the effort to retard the progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD),3 giving new impetus to the research in the field.
