ESKD or Cancer: Given the Choice, Which Would You Rather Have?
Chronic kidney disease is a major global health problem, largely driven by the increased prevalence of important risk factors such as diabetes and hypertension, as well as by the growth in the older population as life expectancy has improved.1 Reducing the progression of earlier stages of chronic kidney disease to end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) is a key area of concern and a pressing research need.2 This is especially important given that ESKD rates are projected to increase globally, such that the number of people requiring renal replacement therapy (dialysis and/or kidney transplantation) is estimated to more than double, to 5.4 million worldwide, by 2030.
