Home Alone: Does Modality Matter? Revisiting Hospital Readmissions in Dialysis

Many patients’ preferences for peritoneal dialysis (PD) compared to in-center hemodialysis (ICHD) derive from their ability to administer the therapy at home.1-3 As opposed to traveling to a dialysis center 3 or more times per week, patients receiving PD have greater flexibility over when and where they administer dialysis. This may explain why patients receiving PD are more likely to be employed and, in some studies, report better quality of life and higher satisfaction with their care.4,5 Despite these potential PD advantages, patients receiving ICHD may benefit from more frequent encounters with health care providers.
