Performance of the CKD-EPI Equation to Estimate GFR in a Longitudinal Study of Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease
GFR can only be measured indirectly.1 Because the gold standard, renal inulin clearance, is cumbersome, alternatives such as renal iothalamate clearance and plasma iohexol clearance were developed. Other methods estimate GFR using equations (eg, the often-recommended CKD-EPI equation) based on endogenous filtration markers such as creatinine and cystatin C.2
