Patient Education and Choice of Peritoneal Dialysis
The economic, social, and individual burden of end-stage kidney disease continues to increase internationally. In the United States, the end-stage kidney disease program accounts for ∼6% of the total cost of the government’s Medicare budget.1 Many countries are now exploring ways to reduce this financial burden, one of which has been to encourage the use of home-based peritoneal dialysis (PD), a less expensive modality than facility hemodialysis (HD).1 In many countries, PD remains significantly underused2 despite offering a number of benefits to the patient, such as treatment flexibility and independence.
