Continuous Dialysis Therapies: Core Curriculum 2016

Over the past 2 decades, the development of new renal replacement therapy (RRT) techniques, including continuous RRT (CRRT), has allowed the therapy to be offered to sicker and hemodynamically unstable patients in the intensive care unit (ICU) setting. However, studies designed to compare continuous versus intermittent therapies have not shown a beneficial effect on mortality. Several inherent characteristics of CRRT, including the longer duration of therapy, have been associated with greater hemodynamic stability and a higher likelihood of kidney recovery compared to standard intermittent hemodialysis (IHD).
