Improving Our Understanding of Quality of Life in CKD
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is common, affecting ∼10% of adults in most large population-based surveys.1-3 That CKD adversely affects clinical outcomes, including cardiovascular disease, progression to end-stage kidney disease, and mortality, is now well established.4 The impact of CKD on patient-centered outcomes, in particular health-related quality of life (HRQoL), is far less clear. HRQoL is a critical outcome measure for patients with reduced kidney function. It reflects the patient’s perspective on how kidney disease and/or its treatment have affected his or her life.
