Time in Target Range: The Optimal Marker for Kidney Protection
A single hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) value or a single clinic blood pressure reading is a photograph. It captures one instant and tells us little about the weeks and months on either side of it. Yet much of how we grade glycemic and blood pressure control still rests on these isolated snapshots. Two patients can share an identical HbA1c of 7.5% and an identical systolic blood pressure (SBP) of 135 mm Hg and have lived very different years, one steady and one swinging between extremes. Time in target range (TTR) was conceived to capture that difference.
