A genetic kidney disease may be suspected when an individual’s clinical features are consistent with a known genetic diagnosis, or when disease presents at an early age, syndromic manifestations are found, or there is another affected family member.1 Genetic kidney disease should also be considered when it is common. However, population frequencies for genetic diseases based on disease-causing variants have only become available in recent years, mainly owing to advances in large-scale genomic sequencing and the development of population-based genetic databases.
