Nearly 100,000 patients in the United States await kidney transplantation.1 Exceeding Texas by 2-fold, New York by 2.5-fold, and Florida by 3.5-fold, 18,000 patients in California are on the longest waitlist and have the greatest wait time for deceased donor kidneys in the United States.2 Living donor kidney transplantation (LDKT), especially when performed preemptively (before dialysis initiation), is the ideal treatment for patients with end-stage kidney disease (ESKD). Despite offering increased longevity and lower health care costs,3 national LDKT numbers have declined over the past 2 decades, notably among racial/ethnic minority groups.
