Enrollment Barriers and Demographic Trends in Hemodialysis Access Clinical Trials
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) disproportionately affects minority populations in the US, with age-standardized CKD prevalence rates in Black populations being two-fold higher than White populations (Black=19.9% [95% CI, 10.2-13.7%], White=11.9 % [95% CI, 10.2-13.7%]).1 Health disparities persist in vascular access creation with Black and Hispanic patients being 10-28% less likely to initiate hemodialysis with an arteriovenous fistula (AVF) than White patients.2 It's expected that only 59% of incident AVF creations will be functionally patent at 1 year.
