Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Living Donor Kidney Transplantation in California: 2010-2024
Nearly 100,000 patients in the U.S. await kidney transplantation.1 Exceeding Texas by 2-fold, New York by 2.5-fold, and Florida by 3.5-fold, 18,000 patients in California are on the longest waitlist and have the greatest wait time for deceased donor kidneys in the U.S.2 Living donor kidney transplantation (LDKT), especially when performed preemptively (before dialysis initiation), is the ideal treatment for patients with end-stage kidney disease (ESKD). Despite offering increased longevity and lower healthcare costs,3 national LDKT numbers have declined over the past two decades, notably among racial/ethnic minority groups.
