Comment on “Higher Renal Net Acid, but Not Higher Phosphate Excretion During Growth Associates With Lower Adult Circulating Uromodulin”

We read with interest the recent Journal of Renal Nutrition article examining whether biomarker-assessed endogenous acid loads and phosphate excretion during growth are prospectively associated with adult circulating uromodulin in participants of the Dortmund Nutritional and Anthropometric Longitudinally Designed cohort (n = 358).1 The authors report an inverse association between higher long-term net acid excretion (NAE) during childhood/adolescence and lower adult circulating uromodulin, alongside a positive association with higher urinary pH, whereas urinary phosphate excretion and urinary potential renal acid load (uPRAL) showed no significant relationships.
