The Emerging Role of Prehabilitation in Kidney Transplant Candidates

Frailty is a common syndrome among kidney transplant (KT) candidates. Estimates suggest that 91,738 KT candidates across the United States are frail.1 These numbers are expected to grow since age is associated with frailty and older patients are increasingly pursuing KT. The percentage of KT candidates ≥65 years of age has already increased from 12% to 26% over the past 2 decades.2,3 KT candidates who are frail experience more adverse post-KT events, including longer hospital lengths of stay, rehospitalizations, delirium, delayed graft function, immunosuppression intolerance, and death.
