Comment on “Effect of Protein Supplementation on Health-Related Quality of Life in Individuals With Advanced Chronic Kidney Disease: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials”
We read with considerable interest a recent systematic review and meta-analysis exploring the role of protein supplementation in influencing health-related quality of life (HRQOL) among patients with advanced chronic kidney disease (CKD).1 The analysis suggests that such supplementation does not confer meaningful improvements in HRQOL. Notably, protein and/or amino acid intake was linked to modest but significant gains in serum albumin levels (MD = 1.76 g/L, P = .002) and body mass index (MD = 0.29 kg/m2, P = .004) compared with control groups.
