Selecting Antihypertensive Medications for Kidney Transplant Recipients: Flying Blind

Hypertension is highly prevalent among kidney transplant recipients, with incidence rates reported between 70% and 95%. It represents a significant modifiable risk factor associated with adverse cardiovascular outcomes, diminished graft survival, and reduced overall patient longevity.1 The risk factors contributing to hypertension in this population are broadly consistent with those in the general adult population, including advanced age, male gender, tobacco use, obesity, insulin resistance, and obstructive sleep apnea.
