Supportive Care for Patients Receiving Maintenance Hemodialysis: Why Nephrologists Should Care and What They Can Do

There has been much recent progress in understanding and beginning to address the many supportive care needs of patients with kidney disease. Consensus statements and guidelines, such as those by the International Society of Nephrology1 and KDIGO (Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes),2 recognize kidney supportive care (KSC) as a core component of integrated kidney care and specify that it should be available for all people with advanced chronic kidney disease, regardless of their kidney failure treatment modality, according to their supportive care needs.
