Physical Exercise in Patients With Chronic Kidney Disease: A Call to Action
By stimulating muscle protein synthesis and decreasing protein degradation, physical exercise is a major anabolic factor.1 Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), including those with end-stage kidney disease, suffer from a number of comorbidities, including protein-energy wasting and cardiovascular disease, that contribute to poor quality of life (QOL) and high mortality rates. A large number of data show that increasing physical activity levels and/or engaging in a range of different types of physical activity can improve physical and cardiometabolic function, overall health, and QOL of individuals with CKD.
