Sex Inequities in Kidney Transplantation: A Persistent and Multifaceted Challenge
When it comes to kidney transplantation, women demonstrate the greatest altruism, disproportionately serving as organ donors while remaining under-represented as recipients. Despite being the gold standard for kidney replacement therapy, kidney transplantation remains riddled with systemic barriers for women at every stage—fewer referrals, delayed evaluations, and inequities in waitlisting and transplantation.1 These disparities persist even though female kidney transplant recipients demonstrate post-transplant outcomes that are comparable, if not superior, to their male counterparts.
