In my several years of practice as a nephrologist, I have concluded that concepts of renal health and disease are difficult to understand by patients and their families. Among the most difficult to explain are glomerular diseases, electrolyte disorders, and renal replacement therapy. Cystic diseases and nephrolithiasis are also difficult to elaborate on just by a mere verbal discussion with the patient.
