Revisiting Protein Restriction in Early CKD: Did We Get it Wrong?
The origins of protein restriction in chronic kidney disease (CKD) date back to the work of Thomas Addis, who demonstrated in the early 20th century that animals fed high-protein diets exhibited kidney hypertrophy, accelerated disease progression, and shortened lifespans.1,2 Subsequent studies linked glomerular hypertension, induced by excessive dietary protein, with vascular injury and progressive glomerulosclerosis, which led to therapies including drug and dietary approaches to relieve glomerular hypertension.
