The Kidney Disease Outcomes Quality Initiative Clinical Practice Guidelines for Nutrition in Chronic Kidney Disease: 2020 Update recommends “adjusting dietary phosphorus intake to maintain serum phosphate levels in the normal range” and states “it is reasonable to consider the bioavailability of phosphorus sources (e.g., animal, vegetable, additives).”1(p S78) Phosphate additives, whose phosphorus is more bioavailable than phosphorus from naturally occurring sources,1 contribute 300 to 1,000 mg of, or ∼12% to 50% of, daily phosphate intake.
