Is Herbal Supplementation in Kidney Disease Ever Allowable?
Mrs Y’s daughter approached me when I was busy with my rounds in the hemodialysis unit. Mrs Y was a longtime user of herbal medicine and a keen supporter for vis medicatrix naturae, namely the healing power of nature advocated by Hippocrates. Unfortunately, she developed chronic kidney disease in her sixties, presumptively attributed to chronic tubulointerstitial nephropathy, partly attributable to consumption of certain herbal supplements.
