Transfers From In-Center Hemodialysis to Peritoneal Dialysis: Better Late Than Never?

Peritoneal dialysis (PD) remains an underutilized dialysis modality despite its many advantages compared to in-center hemodialysis (ICHD), including greater convenience and quality of life, relative preservation of residual kidney function (RKF), and improved early patient survival.1 The historically low uptake of PD in the United States is multifactorial, stemming from health care policy and reimbursement barriers, inadequate patient and care partner education, and limited exposure to this modality among nephrology trainees.
