The Importance of Indigenous Leadership for Reducing Inequities in the Treatment of Kidney Failure

Inequalities in the social determinants of health are well documented for Indigenous peoples worldwide, and are key drivers of health inequity.1-4 Key to understanding the historical impacts of the social determinants of health are the complex intergenerational health profiles of Indigenous peoples, whereby the onset of chronic diseases occurs earlier in life, illness progresses more rapidly, acute and chronic diseases often coexist and interact, and the number and severity of comorbidities within individuals is higher than among otherwise similar non-Indigenous populations.
