Kidney transplantation improves patients’ quality of life, morbidity, and mortality and reduces health care costs.1 Per the United Network of Organ Sharing, 25,000 kidney transplants were performed in 2022 in the United States. Announced in 2019, the Advancing American Kidney Health Initiative aims to double kidney transplants over the subsequent 10 years.2 With the expected increase in transplant volumes and increasing medical complexity of kidney candidates and recipients, we are faced with the continuing challenge of training highly qualified and competent transplant nephrologists.
