Dialysis Technician Burnout: An Opportunity for Empowerment

Burnout among health care workers has long been recognized as a barrier to creating a stable workforce that can provide high-quality care to patients. Defined by Maslach and Jackson1 in 1981, burnout is divided into 3 components: emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and personal accomplishment. The issue has recently garnered more attention in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, when many perceived a new risk to their own health2 while caring for more patients with fewer resources and less support.
