Nutrition Interventions for the Management of Gout

Gout is a common concomitant illness with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and it can increase health risk and treatment burden.1 Gout is commonly occurring in individuals with hypertension and diabetes, the two leading causes of kidney disease.1 CKD and renal insufficiency are also risk factors for developing gout.1 For those with CKD, gout occurs as uric acid excretion is decreased causing an increase in hyperuricemia.1 Gout is common worldwide, with occurrence higher in men than women.2 Postmenopausal women have higher rates of gout.
