On the Importance of Burgers and Salads

The patient is sitting up in bed and moving oatmeal around on her plate when I come to check on her for morning rounds. Her lips are pressed together into a thin line, and her gaze follows me as I cross the room to stand at her bedside. We are awaiting rehabilitation facility placement to discharge her, and there aren’t any changes to the plan. But I worry when I see her looking so displeased. I ask her: how are you feeling?
