Structural Racism in USRDS: A Native Hawaiian Perspective

The report by Johansen et al1 presumes a Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander (NHPI) person’s race is more likely to be correct if the “Country/Area of Origin or Ancestry” response on Form CMS-2728 is “US” or aligns with an NHPI country. This already vague question on Form CMS-2728 could be interpreted as an inquiry about birth country, but birth country should not be used to confirm race and ethnicity. Like for other groups, it is possible for an NHPI person to be born outside of these areas and then move to the United States.
