We read Dr Raphael’s comments1 with interest and some consternation. If the nephrology community is to identify and address racial and ethnic disparities in end-stage kidney disease (ESKD)—a goal of great importance to the US Renal Data System (USRDS)—we must first accurately determine rates of ESKD among important subgroups. The premise of our Research Letter2 was that differences in collection and entry of race data into the USRDS and the US Census threaten accurate determination of rates of disease.
