The Case for a Kidney Emoji

Kidney disease affects approximately 10% of the population globally, and as of 2019 kidney diseases are the 10th most common cause of mortality worldwide, with 1.3 million deaths annually.1,2 Acute kidney injury and kidney failure affect populations with lower socioeconomic status at increased rates.3 These populations are already at risk for limited health care literacy.4 The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated risks for vulnerable patients with kidney disease and amplified the need for clear public health messaging.
