Effect of Policy on Geographic Inequities in Kidney Transplantation

There are nearly 100,000 patients currently awaiting kidney transplantation in the United States; where they live impacts whether they will receive a transplant.1-3 Though more than 17,500 deceased donor kidney transplants were performed in 2020, a mismatch remains between the numbers of organs required and available. Ensuring equitable access to transplantation, regardless of where a patient lives, continues to be one of the most important challenges the US transplant community faces.
