Activin A Signaling Provides an Interorgan Link Between Kidney and Muscle in CKD-Associated Muscle Wasting
Cachexia is prevalent in adults and children with moderate to advanced chronic kidney disease (CKD).1,2 The cachexia syndrome in CKD consists of anorexia, reduced body and muscle mass, poor nutrition, and short stature; the latter 2 features have been clearly associated with increased morbidity (hospitalization) and mortality risk.1,2 There is currently no approved treatment, so there is an unmet medical need to discover novel therapies for this prevalent and significant CKD comorbidity.
