In the Right Place at the Right Time: Growing Evidence for Out-of-Office Blood Pressure Measurement in Hemodialysis Patients

As nephrologists, we are intimately aware of the nuances and challenges involved in managing blood pressure (BP) in patients on hemodialysis. Hemodialysis patients commonly experience large volume shifts between and during treatments, yielding starkly different BP readings at any given time over the course of a week. Further complicating these challenges, BPs measured in the dialysis unit are wrought with measurement artifact. Patients are often miscuffed, malpositioned, uncomfortable, and surrounded by the sounds of blaring televisions and alarming dialysis machines.
