Reconsidering Plant-Based Diets in Patients Receiving Maintenance Hemodialysis
Until recently, prevailing guidelines advised many patients with kidney failure to avoid plant-based foods owing to high potassium or phosphate content, and plant-based diets owing to inadequate protein content and quality.1,2 However, plant-based diets are associated with better cardiovascular health in the general population and are being reconsidered in the diet recommendations for patients treated with maintenance hemodialysis (MHD).3,4 Plant-based foods often contain phosphorus in the less bioavailable form of phytate and yield lower net acid loads than many animal-based foods.
