Interventions for Organ Donor Registration: Good Intentions, Bad Actions

Solid organ transplantation is one of the outstanding success stories of the last century, evolving from dynamic innovation to established gold-standard therapy for people affected by end-organ failure. For those living with kidney failure, successful kidney transplantation offers an opportunity for improved longevity and quality of life and significant cost savings compared to dialysis. However, transplantation is only possible owing to the generous gift of organ donation. Some organs (predominantly kidneys) are donated in life by individuals, but the majority of organ donation occurs after death, where willingness to proceed with organ donation is confirmed by next-of-kin and/or families (“soft” consent).
