Obesity is a growing epidemic in the United States; its prevalence is approximately 42% in adults, with rates of obesity highest in non-Hispanic Black individuals and persons aged 40 to 59 years.1 Rates of severe obesity, defined as body mass index (BMI) greater than 40 kg/m2, have doubled in the past 20 years, threatening nearly 10% of the US population.1 Mirroring these trends in the general population, the prevalence of obesity in patients with kidney failure has increased over time as well.2
