Diabetes mellitus is a devastating disease affecting 463 million adults worldwide.1 In the United States alone, more than 34 million people suffer from diabetes, of whom ∼20% are undiagnosed, and among diagnosed cases, the majority (∼90-95%) are attributed to type 2 diabetes.2 Compounding these estimates, an additional 88 million US adults have prediabetes,2 many of whom are afflicted by associated metabolic complications including insulin resistance, obesity, and dyslipidemia.3
