By means of concurrent publication in American Journal of Kidney Diseases (AJKD) and Journal of the American Society of Nephrology (JASN), we present the interim report of a joint task force established by the National Kidney Foundation and the American Society of Nephrology to reconsider inclusion of race in the estimation of glomerular filtration rate (GFR). This report comes at a time in the United States when the enormous and disproportionate burden of illness and death from coronavirus disease 2019 within minority communities, as well as police violence against Black Americans, has laid bare the racial inequities in health and wellbeing in our society.
