Cultivating the Pipeline of Clinician Investigators in Nephrology: A Perspective From the 2019-2020 AJKD Editorial Interns

Nephrology is experiencing an unparalleled transformation with respect to scientific discovery and policy reform. It is our belief that this is merely the beginning of a new era, with multiple large collaborative partnerships seeking to accelerate clinical research to improve the care of patients with kidney disease. As part of the Kidney Health Initiative,1 Kidney Innovation Accelerator (KidneyX) is pioneering innovative research through a series of merit-based funding opportunities. The Kidney Precision Medicine Project (KPMP),2 funded by the NIDDK, is integrating longitudinal clinical data with molecular and imaging data derived from kidney biopsy tissue from patients with acute kidney injury or chronic kidney disease.
