A Global Accounting of Kidney Replacement Therapy

The global burden of chronic kidney disease (CKD) has been increasing. From 1990 to 2016, the incidence and prevalence of CKD have increased by nearly 90%, and death from CKD has increased by almost 100%.1 In 2017, the global prevalence of CKD was estimated at 9.1%, affecting 697.5 million people.2 The CKD burden is disproportionately higher in low- and lower-middle-income countries.1 However, ~80% of patients with kidney failure receiving kidney replacement therapy (KRT) live in affluent countries that represent only 12% of the world population.
