Variation in Best Practice Measures in Patients With Severe Hospital-Acquired Acute Kidney Injury: A Multicenter Study

Acute kidney injury (AKI) is common in hospitalized patients1 and associated with longer hospital stay, increased cost of care, and increased risk for death. There is no specific therapy for most common forms of AKI in hospitalized patients. Instead, AKI is managed by a set of responses, which could be termed “best practices.” Expert groups such as KDIGO2,3 and the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) have proposed overlapping sets of best practices in AKI: simple low-cost interventions with the potential to reduce harm in patients with AKI.
